As Chairman of the Lily Dale Library Committee for the past two years, I have worked with many wonderful volunteers in our community to update and improve our beautiful and historic Marion Skidmore Library. The present building was constructed in 1923, and contains many rare and out-of-print books written about Spiritualism. Our biggest annual fundraiser in support of the work that needs to be done is the Victorian Séance held during the summer season. As you can see by the picture, many wonderful mediums generously give of their time and energy to support this colorful event. Our 2008 Victorian Séance was one again a resounding success. With the help of many willing and enthusiastic volunteers, this event raised $3710.59 for the Marion Skidmore Library. All the mediums were dressed in Victorian costume as you can see in the photo, and this year many of the sitters were costumed as well. It was a beautiful sight! There were 116 sitters and 19 mediums who took part in this colorful event in our 1883 Lily Dale Auditorium. Raising the vibration with songs from the Victorian era was the Hutchinson Family Revival, a western New York-based vocal ensemble. All sitters joined hands around their tables during the opening prayer, and the séance was ready to begin. A few mediums had their tables moving, some tables slowly tapping out replies to sitter’s inquiries, some in a more playful mood, moving noisily across the floor. Other mediums demonstrated flower readings, smoke readings, spirit art, planchette and mental mediumship in various styles. The only complaint we had was that some sitters found the noise from the moving tables a little distracting, so this event may not be for you if noise from tapping tables and giggling sitters would be distracting to you. Following the séance, delectable cakes, pastries and refreshments were served as everyone chatted excitedly about their experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing you all next year!
